Harmonious Children Rehabilitation Association (HCRA) Child Sponsorship Program began life as a small project that aimed to provide social welfare services for a handful of disadvantaged children. One of the most frequently asked questions is, “How does HCRA select the children to be sponsored?” Since the number of impoverished families here is overwhelming, we identify the children most in need, based on an extensive assessment process that includes interviews of the children, their parents, and local officials. In addition, we choose communities that are strongly committed to working with us, as the support of the community leaders of the slums is vital for us to carry out our work. Our goal is to build our sponsor base so that we can serve other communities. Starting with a handful of children in 2001, more and more children were gradually added to the program until as of today we have over 1000 special children as well as regular school going children enrolled in our program in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand & Punjab. We monitor the progress of the sponsored children very closely. This includes tracking their attendance and progress in school, their participation in School activities, and their health status.
